Andy Kaufman Documentary In The Works From Uncut Gems Directors

Alex Braverman is set to direct an upcoming documentary feature about the legendary comedian, Andy Kaufman, with Uncut Gems creators set to produce.

A documentary feature film about the late comedian Andy Kaufman has just begun production. Kaufman was a beloved comedian and performance artist back in the ’70s and ’80s. He first received a major spotlight when he was invited to be a part of the first season of Saturday Night Live. On that show, he would develop a character that would go on to evolve into the character of Latka Gravas, Kaufman’s most famous role from the sitcom, Taxi. Unfortunately, Kaufman passed away in 1984 after a battle with lung cancer at the age of 35.

As first announced by THR, Alex Braverman is set to direct an upcoming documentary feature about Kaufman. The director of Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain, Morgan Neville, will be producing the film through his company Tremolo Productions. Also involved in producing are Josh and Benny Safdie, famously known for creating Uncut Gems, as well as Rick Rubin and Chuck Braverman, the producers of Kaufman’s 1980 special, Andy Kaufman Plays Carnegie Hall.

This upcoming documentary will be the first film about Kaufman since he was portrayed in the 1999 biopic, Man on the Moon, by Jim Carrey. Braverman states that he has always wanted to make a film about Kauffman and that he hopes the film will honor his legacy. Producers of the film have secured rights to many of Kaufman’s performances, as well as a few select films. The documentary will also feature never-before-seen footage and audio of Andy Kaufman from early in his career. The untitled film is yet to be set up with any studio or network nor does it have a release date set.
