Janelle Monaé To Play Josephine Baker in French Resistance Series

Janelle Monaé is set to play Jazz Age star Josephine Baker in a television series about her role in the French Resistance during World War II.

Janelle Monaé is set to star as the American-born Jazz Age French entertainer Josephine Baker in a television series about her role in the French Resistance during World War II. Known primarily for her musical career, Monaé has successfully made strides into the acting world by taking roles in Best Picture winner Moonlight, as NASA engineer Mary Watson in Hidden Figures, and feminist Dorothy Pitman Hughes in The Glorias. She is set to star in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2, the sequel to his popular whodunit mystery film starring Daniel Craig.

Per Deadline, singer and actor Monaé will star as Josephine Baker in an upcoming television French Resistance series titled De La Resistance. American independent film company A24, the studio behind Eighth Grade, Lady Bird, and Moonlight will produce the show along with Monaé under her own Wondaland company. Writer Jennifer Yale of Dexter and Underground has been tapped as showrunner. Damien Lewis, author of the Josephine Baker book The Flame Of Resistance, will serve as a researcher on the show as well as executive co-producer.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker danced on the street for money before scoring a job as a part of a chorus line on Broadway in New York City. She later moved to Paris, France where her fame grew exponentially. There, she perfected her erotic on-stage persona, released music, and starred in feature films. When Germany invaded France at the beginning of World War II, Baker became an important member of the French Resistance, transporting sensitive information about Nazi troop movements to Allied forces. She later became an integral part of the Civil Rights movement in the United States.
