Stranger Things actor David Harbour addresses the possibility of a Jim Hopper spinoff show following news of Netflix’s plan for more Hawkins content.
Stranger Things actor David Harbour addresses the possibility of a spinoff for his character Jim Hopper. Stranger Things season 4 just released its last two episodes July 1, and season 5 is expected to release mid-2024 or even late-2023. Much to fans’ relief, Harbour’s character was found surprisingly alive in a Soviet gulag in season 4, and his reunion with Joyce, Eleven, and the gang was long awaited this season.
With Hopper now returned to Hawkins for the final season, fans are excited to see him interact with characters he only saw again in the season finale. A fan-favorite, Hopper’s sad but relatable story of losing his daughter developed beautifully with his parental relationship with Eleven. Although they were separated for the majority of the season, Will, Hopper, Joyce, Jonathan, and Eleven seem to be finally coming together as a family, completing Hopper’s character arc in regards to his daughter and lack of familial ties.

Now, Harbour addresses the possibilities of a Stranger Things Hopper spinoff in an interview with GQ, saying that the Hawkins police chief is a strong enough character to stand on his own without the actor playing him. While a spinoff would most likely be a prequel, Harbour says he thinks Hopper can be used to go forward or back in time. Later in the interview, he even offers up Euphoria star Jacob Elordi as his choice for a young Hopper. Check out his full quote below:
At this point, I think Hopper is a character that can exist independent of me. If they wanna go back in time, forward in time… I’d love to see another actor play Hopper, and see what they can bring to it.
Stating that Elordi could pull off being as handsome as he was at 20, Harbour’s spinoff comments come after the Netflix announcement of a Stranger Things spinoff series that offered no details on story or characters. Netflix also announced a Stranger Things stage play set in the same world as the show. With likely over a year before fans get new Stranger Things content, the prospect of a spinoff has audiences buzzing about learning the origins of Hawkins’ issues, and potentially more of Hopper’s backstory.
If the spinoff is in fact a prequel involving Hopper, it will hopefully offer more details about Hawkins’ supernatural happenings as well. Although this will hopefully be addressed in the final season, leaving the supernatural origins of Hawkins vague and exploring them further in a prequel could be a good approach. The only problem with exploring a young Hopper is that he is a broken man from the time his daughter dies until Stranger Things season 1, so it will be interesting to see how the creators would handle his character arc that has already been fleshed out in current seasons.
